  • Update Letter from Kathy Salzberg!!

    March 20, 2012

    Dear NEPGP friends,

I want to update you on my progress.  I had a lovely visit with Toni and Linda yesterday here at Forge Hill and they brought me up to date on NEPGP news along with a gorgeous bouquet of spring flowers and an adorable Bichon Frise (a stuffed version!) Thank you, dear friends.

I suffered a subarachnoid brain aneurysm back on August 18, 2011, and I have not been back to my Cape Cod home since.  I collapsed at a restaurant while dining with my partner Lee, brought to the floor by the worst headache of my life.  I was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital then on to Mass General in Boston.  Because I got pneumonia and a series of other infections, I was transferred to Harrington House, a nursing home in Walpole, postponing my brain surgery until October, but thanks to the skill of the MGH surgeons, I pulled through and began my long journey of recovery.

I have no memory of my hospital stay there or at Harrington House but am told I chatted with friends and family and blew kisses to the nurses.  From MGH, I went to Braintree Rehabilitation Hospital for six weeks, then to the Maples Convalescent Center in Wrentham, MA for five more.  I am now a resident of Forge Hill Senior Living, a wonderful assisted living facility in Franklin, MA, where I have my own apartment, get three nourishing meals a day and all the help I need while I recover.  (Note to fellow groomers – it’s time to get yourself a long-term healthcare policy!)

This life-changing journey has made me much more aware of the fierce love of my children and siblings who gathered around my bed wherever I was.  My daughter Missi managed to run our businesses with the unfailing assistance of our staff at the Village Groomer and those at her new venture, Chickadee Feed and Seed, while at the same time she and wife Tracy welcomed baby daughter Evangeline into the world, grandbaby number six for me.  Missi also became my advocate, at my side every day monitoring every aspect of my care and updating friends and family through her Facebook page throughout.  My son Peter became my driver and caretaker as well and I will always be grateful to them for their loving care.

This journey changed me at my core.  I no longer take the little things in life for granted.  I have gained a new understanding and empathy for my fellow travelers, challenged by age and infirmity, especially the new friends I have met through the Brain Aneurysm Foundation, which includes a wonderful online support group of kindred spirits who inspire me daily with their courage and grace.  I have graduated from my wheelchair, my walker and will soon no longer need my cane.  Although I have been physically separated from my sweetheart back on Cape Cod, our heart connection is still strong.  I believe that every day that I have left here on earth is a bonus, God’s answer to the onslaught of prayers that bombarded Heaven by those who loved me and refused to let me go. Thank you to each and every one of you for your cards, well wishes and prayers. I hope to see you soon!

    Love,Kathy Salzberg
